Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
